MAZON : A Jewish Response to Hunger, makes grants to
anti-hunger organizations locally and around the world. MAZON receives most
of its funds from families who make donations at the time of bar & bat
mitzvahs and other Jewish festive events. On Friday, March 16, 2007, Rabbi
Sheryl Lewart of Temple Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades and Bria
Silbert of MAZON presented a grant check of $10,000 from MAZON to Westside
Food Bank’s Bruce Rankin, (Executive Director) and Bruce Rosen (Board
President.) Many thanks go to MAZON and to Temple Kehillat Israel for their
generous support of our hunger relief efforts.

The Parish of Saint
Matthew in Pacific Palisades honored Westside Food Bank at their annual
Spring Garden Party in 2007. Students from the school built this
beautiful canned food cottage (above) to commemorate the occasion.

Westside Food Bank, The Art Institute and
Wild Oats Markets Build Giant “Can Castle” for Hunger Awareness Day Event!
On Tuesday, June 6, 2006, students from the Art Institute of
California – Los Angeles (located in Santa Monica,) built a large-scale
sculpture of a sand castle made entirely of canned food at Westside Food
Bank’s warehouse, located at 1710 22nd Street in Santa Monica.
Susanne Manheimer, Chair of the Graphic Design Department, and
Marlene Simon, Graphic Design Graduate Advisor, spearheaded talented
Design Students for this wonderful charity event to raise awareness about
the issue of local hunger. Head designer, Omar Vejar-Diaz, led fellow
students Talia Pacheco, Matthew Fields, Marybelle Gnamien,
and Oscar Pena in bringing to life his “can castle” design. Wild
Oats Markets in Santa Monica contributed the cans that were used to
create the sculpture. "We are honored to work with Westside Food Bank and
be a part of Hunger Awareness Day here in Santa Monica. Community
involvement, especially helping those less fortunate than ourselves, is
something we take very seriously at Wild Oats." -- Jim Price, Wild Oats
City Marketing Manager for Santa Monica.
"We are happy to contribute all of the
food necessary for this wonderful event on Hunger Awareness Day, as part of
our ongoing relationship with Westside Food Bank." -- Gary Aquino, Store
Director, Wild Oats on Wilshire.
The giant sculpture was unveiled at
4pm on June 6, 2006 at Westside Food Bank’s warehouse at 1710 22nd
Street in Santa Monica. All foods used were donated to Westside Food
Bank. Westside Food Bank supplies food to 65 social service agencies
with food assistance programs in Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, West Los
Angeles, Inglewood and West Hollywood. The Food Bank’s food now reaches
more than 80,000 people each year, nearly half of whom are
children.
